This is fascinating. I had no idea our experience was not a one-off thing! Mario must’ve been some kind of guy. Either that or he’s the last drops of rum in a tanker captain’s provisions!

Given the limited range of VHF, it has clearly become a popular pastime for bored idiots with nothing better to do.
One night, at about 3.30am I got so tired of listening to “Maaaarrriiioooo! Where are you Maaarrrioo!”, that I answered “This is Mario, Over”. At that point, the local VTS, who were equally tired of listening to Mario, intervened and reminded us that channel 16 was for emergency use, after which a golden silence returned…. for almost 20 minutes.
