Aug 3-4, 2025. 104 nm in 20 hours, average speed 5.1 kts, max 9.2 kts. A lovely motor through the D&C canal. Then it got a little rough with a lot of waves despite minimal wind. We decided to give Cape May a wide berth as we rounded the Cape overnight and there were many shoals and buoys about. We were glad we had radar and some moonlight! We slowed down to 4 kts on purpose to make Avalon by sunrise. Cruising mode! Getting into Avalon via Townsends Inlet was a lot easier with the help of Adam of the Commodore Bay Marina giving us local guidance. While the buoys are accurate heading inward, there is good advice to be taken regarding which side of the channel to favor.
1. Avalon, NJ
A lovely holiday seaside town with a nice, walkable restaurant and shopping strip. The Commodore Bay Marina has about 3 slips for sailboats and can accommodate our fat cat, even in the channel. We picked up our Brig console dinghy here!
