We Are Floating in a River of Garbage

Mel wrote the title of this post this morning, shortly after her ritual of ascending the stairs to the saloon and sussing out the visual and emotional atmosphere of the day. Sometimes she sees a gloomy overcast. That means Lazytime. Sometimes, she sees sunshine. That means Funtime! Fluffy clouds? Workin’ Time. This morning? Garbage.

Hooray! Must be Karma-Banking Time!

Real-life: not all collections around the bow of a catamaran contain dolphins. Sometimes, it is trash.

What is Karma-Banking Time? Well, Mel has previously mentioned that she has endured a lifelong struggle to shake a completely irrational belief that there is a scorecard somewhere that adds up your good experiences and balances it with bad experiences. This is, of course, utter BS. Nevertheless, Mel has found some advantages to this flawed philosophy: when things do not go as planned, or hardship ensues, one becomes excited about the teeter-totter swing of good times to come. The flip side is that one must resist the opposite impulse to dread the future when one enjoys a sustained period of happiness.

And so Mel relishes the garbage floating around her boat, as this means that she will enjoy the payback in positive experiences during her upcoming long offshore to Bermuda.

Hmmm…Perhaps sailing is not the best way to shake this belief.

The photo library below will take you through one of our last spectacular sunsets in Newport, which has so many amazing sunsets that you have to feel a big disaster is coming. We also had a lovely Halloween in Mystic, CT, before heading to our current marina berth in New London. After having been on a ball for several weeks, wearing 10 layers of clothing and freezing our butts off, we now have rediscovered the glories of something called “shore power”. OMG, game-changer. Who knew?

    1. Helpful advice, Julie! I did find some wool leggings in a dry bag the other day, and now I wear them constantly!
